Plant Your Own Peas at Home
Today we’re going to show you how you can grow your own peas at home. Peas are easy to grow and can be started inside.
If you'd like to follow along at home, visit our Retail Yard at 150 Hwy 99 Eugene, OR 97402, to pick up a free kit containing a pea seed, potting soil, and a peat pot. Available while supplies last!
Here’s all you’ll need:
- Pea seeds
- A peat pot
- A well-draining potting soil
- A spray bottle
Here’s what you do:
1.) Take your peat pot and fill it almost to the top with your soil.
2.) Using your finger, make a small indent in the soil. It should be about twice the size of the seed. Drop the seed in the indent and cover up the top of it like this. Only one seed per pot should be used.
3.) Spray some water on the soil. It is important that the soil gets water but not too much. You’ll want it to be damp but not soggy. Several good sprays to cover the top at first should be the right amount.
Your seed is now ready to germinate. This is the process where a seed develops into a plant. It's important to note that not all seeds germinate. Seeds need water, oxygen, and the right temperature to grow.
4.) Find a place to keep the pot that gets sunlight. A windowsill is a great spot to keep your pot as the seed begins to grow.
Over the next few days, keep an eye on it. Check the soil every day by tapping it. If it feels dry, spray some more water on it.
5.) If your seed germinates, then after about a week or so you should start to see a sprout coming out of the soil. Your plant is growing! Keep it going. Make sure it still gets plenty of sunlight and water.
